When Apurimac Ferrum S.A. needed to establish the costs for a heavy haul rail transport system to deliver iron ore from the Apurimac Region in central Peru to a proposed new terminal near San Juan de Marcona, they selected Ausenco.

We delivered detailed capital and operating cost estimates for the complete railway system, covering over 500 km through topography that varied from flat, desert-like conditions to severe mountainous terrain and elevations from sea level to over 4,500 m.

The scope of the preliminary feasibility study included aerial route reconnaissance, preliminary alignment design using digitised topographic mapping, locomotive performance simulation, review of AC traction (locomotives) and electronically controlled pneumatic braking systems (railcars), and development of railway system manpower.

Ausenco developed the complete railway system including:
